Devoted to Protecting DV Survivors
Since joining DWT in 2016, Jibraun Riaz has devoted well over 800 hours to assisting survivors of domestic violence in securing protection orders, primarily through the L.A. Providing DV Survivors a Means to Keep Their Personal Info Private
In last year’s report, we described a novel solution developed by our team to enable participants in Washington state’s Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) to purchase property without publicly disclosing their name or address.
James A. Greenfield, a partner in DWT’s real estate practice, led the effort. His innovative proposal was to disguise purchaser names by means of a revocable trust mechanism, a tool similar to one used by many wealthy property buyers, which allows the trust to be listed as the property owner in county land and tax records, rather than the ACP participant.
The project was highlighted by Chambers and Partners at the organization’s Chambers Diversity & Inclusion Awards USA 2023, where DWT was named a finalist in the category of Pro Bono: Outstanding Firm. Chambers stated that DWT “demonstrated significant creativity” in its approach to the project and noted that the firm “always brings innovation and inclusivity” to its pro bono efforts.
Washington’s secretary of state, Steve Hobbs, also paid a special visit to DWT’s Seattle offices to personally express his gratitude.
Team: James A. Greenfield, Brian D. Hulse, Nancy A. Brownstein, James A. Flaggert, Katherine L. Jeffrey, Karen N. Johnstone, Peter J. Mucklestone, Dirk Giseburt, Jayanne A. Hino, and Joanna Plichta Boisen.
