Meet the Pro Bono & Social Impact Team

Joanna P. Boisen

Chief Pro Bono & Social Impact Officer

Joanna Plichta Boisen is DWT's first chief pro bono and social impact officer. In this role, she oversees the firm’s acclaimed nationwide pro bono, social impact, and corporate social responsibility department. She develops and executes on entrepreneurial pro bono and community initiatives, builds out client-interfacing opportunities, and procures cutting edge, high-impact pro bono matters. She also maintains her own pro bono clients focusing on underrepresented communities, Holocaust survivor reparation litigation, domestic violence advocacy, and income-eligible nonprofit organizations.

Joanna also serves as outside counsel to in-house legal departments interested in building out and developing sophisticated pro bono core priorities and programs.

Prior to joining DWT, Joanna was the first pro bono counsel, and then the first pro bono partner at a leading Seattle law firm where she spent 12 years and founded an award-winning, nationally recognized pro bono program while launching the firm’s first nonprofit practice.

With her team, Rachel sets the strategy and vision for DWT’s pro bono and social impact projects and initiatives nationwide, creates core programming, and works on key projects with DWT’s attorneys, staff, and clients. Rachel graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and worked as an actor and musician in New York City and Los Angeles before moving to Seattle. In Seattle, she earned her paralegal certificate from the University of Washington and worked in the investment management group in one of Seattle’s leading law firms. When the opportunity to focus exclusively on pro bono work arose at DWT, Rachel—with a lifelong commitment to community service—was thrilled at this prospect, and today focuses on access to justice, community outreach, and corporate social responsibility issues. She is passionate about sharing her thoughts and experiences on service to others and access to justice, with anyone who will listen.

Rachel currently serves as the secretary of the board of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel, an international mission-driven membership organization of over 300 attorneys and practice group managers who run pro bono practices in over 130 of the world’s largest law firms.
